A LEAF NAMED JACK "Every Tree is but a Leaf on The Tree of Life"

A LEAF NAMED JACK There are leaves in the world.
And people.
In fact, there are more leaves than people.
But the human embryo
is no less important
than an apple seed,
or an acorn.
"I used to hold myself upwards
like the palm of a human hand"
said a leaf named Jack,
"and drink the rain,
lustily.
But then magic mushrooms sprouted
on my tree's trunk,
and somehow I knew
I was a leaf,
yet, simultaneously, also
the whole tree!"
The many leaves flickered
in the cool summer breeze -
in acknowledgement
of the wise leaf Jack's words.
But the clouds were not impressed.
They had seen
vast forested valleys sprout and die.
The clouds knew
every tree was but a leaf
on The Tree of Life.
And that The Tree of Life was but a leaf
turned upwards,
like the palm of the hand of a god.

I hope you enjoy this short poem - which I feel echoes the "provocatively titled" previous article "Liars & Cheats" - by suggesting that however expanded our consciousness might be, it might well be wise to remain humble...
That however deeply we might feel we have arrived at "the ultimate understanding" -
perhaps there are understandings beyond our own -
and understandings beyond those...
With respect always,
Mark.
