ECOLOGICAL TYRANNY

OF COURSE Urban, Consumerist, Industrial Society is Detrimental to the Earth. But that Doesn´t Justify Ecological Tyranny And so it was that little Johnny,

who was only six,

betrayed his parents

into the inhuman hands of the Ecological Police.

The E.P., however, considered themselves heroes and heroines

of a new, clean, harmonious Earth –

defenders of humanity´s passage

into a post-industrial, pollution-free, waste-free future –

almost-religious defenders

of an unprecedented secular, global Eden.

And so it was that with holy zeal, crusading conviction, and inquisitional precision –

having received little Johnny´s faithful phone call –

the Ecological Police convicted his parents to six months internment

in an Ecological Re-Education Camp –

leaving Johnny in the care of the fun-filled municipal

Children of The Eco-Revolution Community Centre.

Should Johnny´s parents have recycled more carefully?

Well, of course they should.

They knew the law.

And the law was clear.

Luckily, as first time offenders,

internment would only be six months.

Meanwhile, Johnny walked into the Community Centre

to the applause of his peers.

He had applied his school lessons admirably.

He was now a very popular boy.

The other day I was reading about a new Fifteen Minute City in the Netherlands, and how people would get about by bike, and share cars, and (by extension) all live together in peace and love – and I found myself thinking “well, perhaps the Fifteen Minute City isn´t such a bad idea after all”!

Me! Me! Me who uses dry grass (rather than buy dental floss) to clean between his teeth! Me, who has a fridge made of clay pots lined with wet sand (rather than have an industrially manufactured fridge)! Me who shits outside in a latrine, and makes humanure! Me! Yes, me! Even I was momentarily overcome by a wave of approval for the Tyranny that Approaches waving the Ecological Flag, marching to the beat the Ecological Drum.

And I thought “if even I can be momentarily overshadowed and convinced by the would-be Eco-Tyrants´ Propaganda – what about the many millions of people who live in the cities - and recognise the excesses of their own consumerism, who feel uncomfortable with their alienation from the natural world, who acknowledge the fragility of their dependence on products and food from faraway? How could they not be tempted by an AI-administered, locally-sustainable, green-energy, eco-legislated Earthly Paradise?!

Add to this the many years of indoctrination into the belief that “people are basically stupid and bad” (and that we therefore need a government to protect us) – and how could they not approve tough Ecological Laws, and tough Ecological Police, and tough Ecological Re-Education to ensure (if not enforce) our transition into a promised eco-land of milk and honey?

Brilliant documentaries like Michael Moore´s “Planet of the Humans” * have exposed the lie behind the Ecological Flag. (Track the footprint of “green energy” - or just about anything supposedly-eco - and you´ll find out it isn´t so “eco” after all!) And the fact that Planet of the Humans faced a coordinated suppression campaign led by professional climate activists backed by ‘green’ billionaires, Wall Street investors, industry insiders and family foundations” ** further substantiates its point.

And, anyway - anyone with any emotional literacy can see through the hypocrisy of our would-be Eco Rulers. Their clipped voices, their dead eyes, their stiff limbs – what to speak of their luxurious, utterly anti-ecological lifestyles – all scream “deceitful, untrustworthy, two-faced, unprincipled, power-hungry hypocrites!”.***

Nevertheless, despite all this, sometimes it´s still not so easy to see that politicians and corporations are taking advantage of the global industrial disaster. Yes, OF COURSE urban, consumerist, industrial society is detrimental to the Earth – but that doesn´t justify Ecological Tyranny. It means we need to be less superficial, and reconnect with the earth (not just the Earth), and simplify, and share – not salute the Ecological Flag.

The Ecological Flag is the same ol´ flag – now painted green. It's been red, blue, had stars, had stripes, been decorated with swastikas and sickles and scythes - but it's the same ol´ flag. Its´s been hoisted to the chanting of a thousand different anthems – now it´s rising to a hymn to Mother Earth.

The Ecological Police are already monitoring our recycling habits. Our so-called “schools” are already “educating” little Johnny in his eco-responsibilities. And who needs visible ecological re-education camps (like in my introductory poem)? They´re “so last century”! Now we have invisible internment camps – pioneered by China´s Social Credit System, but proliferating rapidly across every continent since the turn of the century – already using Artificially Intelligent, algorithmic, Big Data profiling systems to reward eco-friendly behaviour - and impose restrictions on employment, access to credit, services and travel for un-ecological behaviour.

How far will Ecological Tyranny go? How brutally repressive will it become? I cannot predict the future – but I can recount the past. And every tyranny has had its war cry. Feudal Tyranny cried “death to the Rebellious Peasants!” Religious Tyranny cried “death to the Heretics!” Colonial Tyranny, “death to the Savages!” Racist Tyranny, “death to the Blacks!” Fascist Tyranny, “death to the Inferior Races!” Communist Tyranny, “death to the Enemies of The People!” Which makes it quite easy to predict that the war cry of Ecological Tyranny will be “death to the Enemies of The Earth!”

In the name, of course, of an all-loving Mother Earth!
