The Staircase Between The Worlds

One day, Chester bought a toolbox. On that same day, his sister Samantha, also bought a toolbox. Neither of them had even thought of buying a toolbox before –

yet on that exact, same, unexceptional day – both of them bought one.

Chester, Samantha and I live together. I am a dog.

“A toolbox? Really? Are you joking?

WHY do you always have to copy me?!” Samantha shouted, angrily.

“Me copy YOU?! At exactly what time did you buy yours then? Chester challenged, astutely.

After half an hour of this I suddenly remembered a tale of two toolboxes in

“The Staircase Between The Worlds, Tales Of Mysterious Synchronicities” up in my library.

So I went and got it, and put it in front of them,

and barked “page 256” - and, eventually, they got it.

At the very least, I thought, it´ll give them food for thought – and as the old canine saying goes “better food for thought, than thought for food!”

“Ill read it, you listen!”

“No, I´LL read it, YOU listen!”

I barked, sternly.

And so it was that Chester and Samantha read about a simliar incidence

of synchronistic toolbox purchasing - in a text many of us consider scripture:

Once upon a time, a long long time ago, when people still spoke to angels,

there were two very messy pups. Their Mummy, whose name was Leyla, was at her wits end. Everywhere she went she´d find a trail of hammers and nails, screwdrivers and screws,

and other assorted tools – for the two messy pups were avid carpenters,

and never stopped putting things together, and pulling them apart.

Leyla fell to her knees and made a prayerful plea: “oh, angels of heaven, and angels of earth –

I know you have requested repairs to the staircase that joins our worlds,

but my two pups have been possessed by creativity, and are completely out of control!

Everywhere I go I trip over their tools –

and soon, without doubt, one of us will end up losing our tail!”

“Oh dear, oh dear, oh dear, oh dear” replied the angels,

who were all prize-winning pedigree poodles “this is indeed a serious situation” -

and they felt poor Leyla´s distress. “What about toolboxes?” the angel-poodles enquired.

“My God! Yes! Yes!” exclaimed Leyla – captivated by the idea -

and she ran around in circles, excitedly.

And so it was that, once upon a time, at exactly the same time, the angels placed the idea of buying a toolbox into the minds of the two messy pups.

“Oh what I good idea I have had!” both pups said to themselves –

and off they both went to the toolbox shop - and bought themselves boxes.

Both pups loved their toolboxes. They were very proud of them.

“This is where the hammer goes” one would say to the other. I always put it in the same place. “Wow!” the other would say, genuinely impressed.

And so it came about that Leyla was able to walk about without fear of treading on a tool,

and was no longer distressed - and the two pups were no longer messy -

and the staircase between the worlds was repaired much more quickly than expected!

Alfonso and Ursula put “The Staircase Between The Worlds, Tales Of Mysterious Synchronicities” on the table. They looked at each other, nervously. "I'm sorry" they said, suddenly, synchronically - and they embraced. I felt very content.
