Equilibrando tu Amor y tu Política No Hay Una Respuesta Intelectual Jim y Carol Taiclot y sus dos hijos celebran las Navidades. Les encantan las Navidades. Son Cristianos. Aman a su prójimo. Tratan a los demás como les gustaría que les trataran a sí mismos. Jim es el Director Ejecutivo de la importante empresa de armas Blockhead Martian. Jim está particularmente orgulloso de su nuevo laboratorio hipersónico de diecisiete millones de dólares en Hauntsville, Alabama. "¿Sabes, Carol, que las armas hipersónicas son capaces de viajar a cinco veces la velocidad del sonido?", le pregunta Jim a su amada esposa. Y si nos unimos a las celebraciones (básicamente) superficiales y sentimentales, ¿está bien? ¿Está bien cantar y sonreír mientras otros sufren por ser tratados como a nosotros, jamás, nos gustaría ser tratados? ¿Hay alguna manera de solidarizarnos con el Corazón Único que late en cada pecho humano - sin quedarnos devastados, abrumados, rotos, e incapaces de funcionar? ¿Es posible experimentar el Amor Universal, soportar el dolor insoportable, y conocer la alegría - al mismo tiempo? Estas son preguntas que se hacen muchísimas personas sinceras y empáticas - especialmente en esta época del año. Pero, en mi opinión, no encontrarán las respuestas que buscan en la discusión ni el debate. La única manera de saber si el Amor Universal es lo suficientemente oceánico como para albergar los horrores de los bombardeos y la hambruna, los adolescentes muertos en uniformes de soldado, y los políticos sociópatas - y, al mismo tiempo, las infinitas bondades, generosidades y actos desinteresados cotidianos de la humanidad, y la belleza esquelética del pleno invierno, y sentir gratitud por el milagro de la existencia misma - es experimentar el Amor Universal. ¿Qué tan grande es el Amor Universal? ¿Cuánto puede albergar? ¿Cuántas contradicciones? No lo sabremos hasta que lo experimentemos. Así que la pregunta, creo, no es si deberíamos o no ser felices mientras otros miembros de la Familia Humana son asesinados y torturados. (Aunque honro a aquellos de nosotros, jóvenes y viejos, que hacemos esta pregunta.) La pregunta, creo, es ¿cómo llegamos a conocer el Amor Universal? ¿Cómo experimentamos el Amor Universal directamente, personalmente? Solo entonces tendremos nuestras respuestas. La Respuesta Experiencial No os haré perder el tiempo con conceptos intelectuales. Claro que el Amor Universal no es sexo. Claro que no es codependencia ni romanticismo. Ni siquiera es amor por “mi” pueblo, mi tribu, mi cultura, mi tierra. (Aunque todas esas relaciones contienen, quizás, su semilla.) Por definición, si es universal - entonces es amor para todos. ¿Pero es eso siquiera posible? ¿Acaso no nos repugna esa gente santa y parsimoniosa que predica el Amor Para Todos? ¿No apestan también a hipocresía - a represión y artificialidad? ¡Sí que apestan! (Bueno, hablo por mí: ¡ a mi me repugnan!). Pero creo que eso se debe a que son unos impostores. El camino hacia el Amor Universal no está bajo nuestro control. No hay rituales correctos que hacer, ni códigos que obedecer, ni disciplinas que seguir. Sin embargo, en mi opinión, existen componentes definidos y reconocibles del Camino del Amor Universal - de los cuales me gustaría nombrar los cuatro que considero más fundamentales... Cuatro áreas a las que debemos prestar atención si queremos tener alguna esperanza de alcanzar la experiencia. Estas son: (1) Nuestros corazones necesitan ablandarse y soltar - y admitir con humildad y honestidad que no conocemos plenamente la Verdad Absoluta . * (2) Nuestros corazones necesitan ablandarse y abrirse a nuestra pertenencia a la Gran Verdad Absoluta que no comprendemos. (Sea lo que sea esta existencia, somos parte de ella - ¿quién puede negarlo?). (3) Luego, cada uno de nosotros/nosotras tiene que aprender a mirarse a sí mismo/misma - con tierna y amable aceptación - y reconocer “ soy una expresión única de la Gran Verdad Absoluta a la que todos pertenecemos, y que ninguno de nosotros comprende plenamente”. ** (4) Y desde allí, solo hay un pequeño paso para sentir que cada persona (y cualquier otra criatura viviente, en realidad) es también una expresión única de la Gran Verdad Absoluta , el Gran Todo, el Gran Misterio que escapa a nuestra capacidad de definición. ¿Acaso el cultivo de estos cuatro aspectos del camino garantizará el éxito de nuestro viaje hacia el Amor Universal? Sí, quizás. No lo sé. Como dije, tal como lo veo - el Camino del Amor Universal no está bajo nuestro control. Jesús enseñó la famosa frase “llama y se te abrirá” - una frase que sugiere la presencia de algo más allá de nuestro control (aquello que abre). El místico y poeta Sufí, Rumi, enseñó que es la sinceridad de nuestro anhelo a lo que responde El Gran Misterio. Solo puedo decir que ahora, a mis setenta años, tras toda una vida de peregrinación, creo que estos cuatro factores son una especie de brújula. Siguen guiándome a mí, y a quienes guío. Y sí. Siento que nuestros corazones se están ablandando y abriéndose, juntos. Entonces ¿Ahora Qué? Hay una oración popular “Dios, concédeme la serenidad para aceptar las cosas que no puedo cambiar, el coraje para cambiar las que sí puedo, y la sabiduría para reconocer la diferencia”. Quizás sea sabio aferrarse a tal distinción - después de todo, hasta que conozcamos el Amor Universal, al menos en cierta medida - necesitamos saber cuánto del sufrimiento ajeno podemos soportar. Si nos derrumbamos bajo el peso de una carga psíquica que no podemos soportar - ¿de qué le serviremos a nadie? Así que tómate un descanso de Navidad - ¡sí! Deja que la convivencia te tranquilice. Mira profundamente a los ojos de las personas en tu vida. Obsérvalas en su singularidad. Deja que te aprecien. ¡Disfruta! Y, al mismo tiempo (déjame ser franco): recuerda que no sabemos qué podemos y qué no podemos cambiar. No lo sabemos - tú no lo sabes, yo no lo sé, nadie lo sabe. Pero - si elegimos el Camino del Amor Universal, y el Amor Universal se expande dentro de nosotros - nuestra percepción de lo que podemos y no podemos cambiar evolucionará. Empezaremos a sentir nuestra igualdad, nuestra igualdad con todo el mundo - no una igualdad sociológica, sino una igualdad existencial. Empezaremos a sentir que todos somos únicos – y todos somos iguales. Nuestros corazones se conmoverán ante la tragedia y la belleza del gran espetáculo de la vida en la Tierra. Nuestra visión se expandirá. Viviendo en nuestra singularidad, descubriremos que estamos contribuyendo de forma singular. Balancing Your Love and Your Politics There Is No Intellectual Answer Jim and Carol Taiclot and their two children celebrate Christmas. They love Christmas. They are Christians. They love their neighbours. They do unto others as they would have them do unto themselves. Jim is the CEO of the prominent arms manufacturers, Blockhead Martian. Jim is particularly proud of their new seventeen million dollar hypersonics lab at Hauntsville, Alabama. “Did you know, Carol, that hypersonic weapons are capable of travelling at five times the speed of sound?” Jim asks his beloved wife. “OMG” his beloved wife replies, “and the speed of sound is already so fast!” Christmas with the Taiclots is a joy. It is a time to remember those they love, those they cherish – those friends and family with whom they share the sacred journey of life. Along with the many Christmas cards the Taiclots receive there is a lot of hate mail. I wonder why?! Could hypocrisy be caricatured more vividly? And yet, and yet... How far removed are you and I from Jim and Carol? Do you and I refuse our Christmas prezzies, or march in protest up and down in front of the naive and oblivious Christians singing sweet psalms on street corners - while our brothers and sisters and uncles and aunts and children and grandparents - in Palestine, and the Ukraine, and Sudan, and - and - and – all suffer unimaginably? And if we do join the (basically) superficial and sentimental celebrations - is that OK? Is it OK to sing and smile while others suffer what we would absolutely not, ever, like done unto us? Is there a way to stand in solidarity with The One Heart that beats in every human chest – and not be stricken to our core, overwhelmed, broken, and unable to function? Is it possible to experience Universal Love, and bear the unbearable pain, and know joy – at the same time? These are questions many, many sincere and empathic people ask – especially at this time of the year. But - in my opinion - they won´t find the answers they seek in discussion or debate. The only way to know if Universal Love is oceanic enough to hold the horrors of bombings and starvation, dead teenagers in soldier uniforms, and sociopathic politicians – and at the same time, humanity´s infinite daily kindnesses and generosities and acts of selflessness, and the skeletal beauty of midwinter, and feel gratitude for the miracle of existence itself – is to experience Universal Love. How big is Universal Love? How much can it hold? How many contradictions? We won´t know until we experience it. So the question, I believe, is not whether we should or shouldn´t be happy while others in The Human Family are being murdered and tortured. (Although I honour those of us, young and old, who ask this question.) The question, I believe, is how do we come to know Universal Love? How do we experience Universal Love directly, personally? Only then we will have our answers. The Experiential Answer I won´t waste your time with intellectual concepts. Of course Universal Love is not sex. Of course it is not co-dependence or romance. It is not even love for “my” people, my tribe, my culture, my land. (Although all such relationships contain, perhaps, its seed.) By definition, if it is universal, then it is love for everyone. But is that even possible? Don´t those parsimonious, holy people who preach Love For All make us all sick? Don´t they also stink of hypocrisy – of denial and artificiality? Yes, they do! (Well – I´ll speak for myself: they make me sick!) But that, I believe, is because they are pretenders. The path to Universal Love is not within our control. There are no right rituals to do, or codes to obey, or disciplines to follow. Nevertheless, in my opinion, there are definite, recognisable components to the Path of Universal Love – of which I would like to name the four I consider the most fundamental... Four areas to which we need to give our attention, if we are to have any hope at all of arriving at the experience. These are: (1) Our hearts need to soften and let go - and humbly, honestly admit that we do not fully know The Absolute Truth .* (2) Our hearts need to soften and open to our belonging to the Great Absolute Truth we don´t understand. (Whatever this existence is, we are part of it - who can deny that?!) (3) Then each of us needs to learn to look upon themselves - with tender, kind acceptance – and recognise “ I am a unique expression of the Great Absolute Truth to which we all belong, and that none of us fully understand”. ** (4) And from there it is only a small step to feel that everyone else (and every other living creature, fot that matter) is also a unique expression of The Great Absolute Truth , The Great Everything, The Great Mystery beyond our capacity to define. Will the cultivation of these four aspects of the path guarantee the success of our journey into Universal Love? Yes, perhaps. I do not know. As I said, as I see it – the Path of Universal Love is not within our control. Jesus famously taught “knock and the doors will be opened” - a phrase that suggests the presence of something beyond our control (that which does the opening). The Sufi mystic and poet Rumi taught that it is the sincerity of our longing to which The Great Mystery responds. All I can say is that now, in my seventies, after a lifetime of pilgrimage, I believe these four factors are a kind of compass. They continue to guide me, and the people I guide. And yes. I feel our hearts softening and opening, together. So What Now? There is a popular prayer “"God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference." There is perhaps a wisdom in adhering to such a discrimination – after all, until we know Universal Love, at least to some degree – we need to know how much of others´ suffering we can shoulder. If we break under the burden of a psychic weight we cannot carry – then what use are we going to be to anyone? So take some time off for Christmas - yes! Let togetherness soothe you. Look deeply into the eyes of the people in your life. See them in their uniqueness. Let them appreciate you. Enjoy! And, at the same time (let me be blunt): know that we do not know what we can and cannot change. We do not know – you do not know, I do not know, nobody knows. But – if we choose the Path of Universal Love, and Universal Love expands within us - our sense of what we can and cannot change will evolve. We will start to feel our equality, our equality with everyone – not a sociological equality, but an existential equality. We will start to feel how we are all unique - and all the same. Our hearts will be blown open by the tragedy and the beauty of the whole show of Life on Earth. Our vision will expand. Living in our uniqueness, we will find we are contributing uniquely. DESCARGAR Y ESCUCHAR AQUÍ: O LEER AQUÍ... LA DEFINICIÓN HABITUAL La locura suele definirse como un estado de disociación de la realidad. Este estado suele representarse en el cine, y describirse en la literatura, como acompañado de la incapacidad de la persona para gestionar su supuesta “no-realidad” - lo que resulta en un comportamiento inestable, inapropiadamente reactivo, abrumado, inseguro, compensatorio, incluso absurdo. Pero no tiene por qué ser así. Alguien puede estar completamente loc@ (disociad@ de la percepción colectiva de la realidad), y ser perfectamente capaz de gestionar su supuesta “no-realidad”. De hecho, ya sea por su inocencia o astucia, su locura puede incluso pasar desapercibida para quienes lo rodean. Yo, por ejemplo, soy uno de es@s loc@s. De l@s astut@s, quizás. No vivo dentro de la realidad colectiva. Veo que casi tod@s sí, pero no les molesto. En cualquier caso, según mi experiencia, a la mayoría no les interesa el estado del No-Saber Absoluto, el estado de Misterio Sagrado en el que vivo - mi exquisita y bendita supuesta “no-realidad”. ¿MI NO-REALIDAD? ¡TU NO-REALIDAD! Decir que alguien (o que una sociedad) está loc@ (por estar "disociad@ de la realidad") presupone conocimiento de la naturaleza de la realidad. Decir "estás disociad@ de la realidad" significa que creemos poseer un conocimiento preciso de la naturaleza absoluta de la realidad, o de la existencia. Si no lo tuviéramos - ¿cómo podríamos decir que alguien (o que una sociedad) está disociad@ de ella y, por lo tanto, loc@? Pero ¿la conocemos? ¿Conocemos realmente la realidad? ¿O la percibimos a través de facultades limitadas y falibles (físicas, intelectuales, etc) - y por lo tanto solo podemos llegar a conclusiones limitadas y falibles sobre su naturaleza absoluta? ¿Y podemos entonces concluir (con cordura) que la realidad es un misterio, más allá de nuestra conceptualización? ¿Y podemos, por lo tanto, decir que es presuntuoso y exagerado; engañoso o, en el mejor de los casos, tonto; y, en última instancia, demente (loco) afirmar conocer la naturaleza absoluta de la realidad? Y dado que todas las culturas dominantes del mundo actual afirman conocer la naturaleza absoluta de la realidad - ¿no podemos decir que todas están locas? Sí, creo que sí. El Materialismo Científico (el concepto de realidad compartido tanto por las Democracias Occidentales como por el Comunismo Centralizado), y el Monoteísmo (el concepto de realidad compartido por los Estados Islámicos y los sectores del Cristianismo que quedan en el mundo "occidental") afirman, ambos, conocer la naturaleza absoluta de la realidad. Puede que las culturas diferentes tengan realidades diferentes (lo que, por definición, significa que se ven unas a otras como locas), pero en los términos en los que estamos hablando - ¡todas están locas! Todas, ridículamente, a pesar de las evidentes limitaciones de la percepción humana en todos los niveles - físico, intelectual, emocional e intuitivo - se autoengañan, ignoran los limites de nuestra conceptualización, fabrican y habitan conceptos arbitrarios de la realidad - y luego los propagan como certeza existencial. Si eso no es una locura, ¿qué lo es? LA CORDURA SALVARÁ AL MUNDO ¿Qué digo entonces? ¿Que si todo el mundo estuviera tan loco como yo, el mundo estaría cuerdo? ¡Sí! ¿Que si las personas fueran honestas consigo mismas y con l@s demás y admitieran que no saben - que esta realidad en la que nos encontramos está más allá de nuestra capacidad de definición - que estamos dentro y formamos parte de Un Misterio Vasto - habría unidad en la Tierra? ¡Sí! ¿Que si las personas realmente aceptaran el No Saber, se darían cuenta de que tod@s desconocemos - igualmente? ¿Que se darían cuenta de que tod@s estamos en la misma situación existencial... Que estamos tod@s igualmente aquí... Que nadie existe más que otr@... Que tod@s somos iguales? ¡Sí! ¿Y creo que eso va a suceder? ¡No! Bueno, no mañana. E incluso si todas las culturas dominantes del mundo comenzaran mañana con la educación existencial - empezando a ayudar a las personas a afrontar su Miedo a lo Desconocido, a aceptarlo y a ser amables con Él - incluso entonces, creo que se necesitarían varias generaciones para que la cordura salvara al mundo. Mientras tanto, como he dicho, no molesto a quienes no quieren ser molestad@s. Y escribo esto para ti, la persona que ha leído hasta el final – y por lo tanto ¡claramente quiere ser molestada! Y a ti te digo: me resulta esclarecedor reconocer que, al caminar por los pueblos y las ciudades de nuestra época, estoy transitando un Estado de Locura Colectiva - en el que el pensamiento, el sentimiento y el comportamiento de la mayoría surgen de una comprensión delirante de la realidad. Y me pregunto "¿co-crearían las personas que vivíeran dentro del Gran Misterio una fealdad urbano-industrial tan anti-natural, y una atmósfera tan funcional y superficial que a mi me resulta aterradora?" No lo creo. Así que ten claridad. Mira dónde estás. ¡Manténte cuerd@! Y por experiencia propia te puedo decir: cuanto más me desprendo del "saber" - más sagrado me parece todo. Yes, that´s a lot! So what´s so special about The Conscious Tribes Movement? * We are pioneering the possibility of The Tribe! Rather than asking people to go and live in a Community or Eco-village, we are bringing the Community and Eco-village to the people! We are pioneering The Tribe - “the non-biological extended family” - so that people can live in community where they already are! We are pioneering (not just The Tribe), but The Conscious Tribe. We are teaching and sharing the philosophy of Radical Honesty (the path of learning to live within one´s own reality) that enables people to travel a conscious path through life, together – without any conflict between their different beliefs. DOWNLOAD & LISTEN HERE OR READ HERE... THE USUAL DEFINITION Madness is usually defined as a state of disassociation from reality. Such a state is usually portrayed in the cinema, and described in literature, as being accompanied by a person´s inability to manage their so-called “not-reality” – resulting in behaviour that is unstable, inappropriately reactive, overwhelmed, insecure, compensatory, absurd even. But that need not be the case. Someone might be completely mad (disassociated from the collective perception of reality), and perfectly capable of managing their so-called “not-reality”. In fact, whether due to their innocence or astuteness - their madness might even go unnoticed by those around them. I, for example, am one such madman. One of the astute ones, perhaps. I do not live inside the collective reality. I see almost everyone does - but I don´t bother them. Anyway, in my experience, most of them aren´t interested in the state of Absolute Not-Knowing, the state of Sacred Mystery, in which I live – my exquisite, blessed so-called “not-reality”. ME NOT-REALITY? YOU NOT-REALITY! To say someone (or a society) is mad (because they are “disassociated from reality”) presumes knowledge as to the nature of reality. To say “you are disassociated from reality” means we think we possess accurate knowledge as to the absolute nature of reality, or existence. If we didn´t - how could we say someone (or a society) was disassociated from it, and therefore mad? But do we? Do we really know reality? Or do we perceive reality through limited and fallible faculties (physical, intellectual, etc) - and are we therefore only able to arrive at limited and fallible conclusions as to its absolute nature? And can we therefore only conclude (sanely) that reality is a mystery, beyond our conceptualising? And can we therefore say it is presumptuous and inflated; deceitful or at best foolish; and ultimately insane (mad) to claim to know the absolute nature of reality? And since all of the dominant cultures in the world today claim to know the absolute nature of reality – can we not say they are all mad? Yes, I think we can. Scientific Materialism (the concept of reality shared both by Western Democracies and Centralised Communism), and Monotheism (the concept of reality shared by the Islamic States and the pockets of Christianity remaining in the ´western´ world) both claim to know the absolute nature of reality. Different cultures might have differing realities (which, by definition, means they see each other as mad), but in the terms in which we are talking – they are all mad! They all, ridiculously, despite the self-evident limitations of human perception at every level – physical, intellectual, emotional and intuitive - nevertheless self-deceive, ignore the limitations of our conceptualising, fabricate and inhabit arbitrary concepts of reality - and then propagate them as existential certainty. If thats´s not nuts – what is!? SANITY WILL SAVE THE WORLD So what am I saying? That if everyone was as mad as me the world would be sane? Yes! That if people were honest with themselves and each other and admitted they didn´t know – that this reality in which we find ourselves is beyond our capacities to define – that we are inside and part of A Vast Mystery – there would be unity on Earth? Yes! That if people truly embraced Not Knowing they would realise that we all don´t know – equally? That they would realise we are all in the same existential situation... That we are all equally here... That nobody exists more than anyone else... That we are all equal? Yes! And do I believe that is going to happen? No! Well, not tomorrow. And even if every one of the world´s dominant cultures began existential education tomorrow – beginning to help people face their Fear of The Unknown, and embrace their fear, and be kind to their fear – even then, it would take various generations, I believe, for sanity to save the world. Meanwhile, as I say, I don´t bother those who don´t want to be bothered. And I write this for you, the person who has read to the end – and clearly, therefore, wants to be bothered! And to you I say: I find it clarifying to acknowledge that as I walk through the towns and cities of our era I am walking through a State of Collective Insanity – in which most people´s thinking, feeling and behaviour is arising from a delusional understanding of reality. And I ask myself “would people who were living inside The Great Mystery have co-created such unnatural urban-industrial ugliness, and an atmosphere that is so functional and superficial that I find it frightening?” I don´t think so. So be clear. See where you are. Stay sane! And from my own experience I can tell you: the more and more I let go of “knowing” - the more sacred everything seems to me.
