I was the bridegroom, taking the world into my arms.” From Mary Oliver´s poem ´When Death Comes´ LOOKING MORE CLOSELY In The Erotic Life of a Mystic (Part 1) I talk about living in The Unknown, welcoming Not Knowing – and relaxing into The Arms of God, The Goddess, The Tao... I talk about the blissful Erotic Embrace of The Totality - and the Love that flows from us when we feel Loved. I describe a state of awareness. In this essay (Part 2), and Part 3, I want to look at that state of awareness more closely. And I want to ask how that awareness acts. How do we behave as this state of awareness matures inside us? (Or ´as we mature inside this state of awareness´.) We love – yes. But what does that look like? Does it mean we sit and stare (looking slightly stoned) all day? Does it mean we become all sweetness and light? Does it mean we never get angry? What does it mean ´To Make Love With Life´? Does it mean we forgo any discrimination? Does it mean we love all action equally? Does it mean we transcend all ecological and political debate? Does living in The Sacred Erotic Embrace affect the way we eat, dress, play – our lifestyle? Do we start to relate differently to the things (inanimate objects) in our life? Do we become promiscuous, or polyamorous? How does living in such pleasure affect our everyday lives? SACRED-EROTIC AWARENESS In The Erotic Life of a Mystic (Part 1) I say that, in my opinion, we already are part-of The Great Mystery - we already belong - continuous sacred-eroticism is already our birthright – we are already loved: that there´s nothing we need to achieve. We just need to soften, to let go, to relax, and open – and feel what we already are. I talk about how people I have guided say that, as they breathe consciously, and bring their attention to their flesh – and let go of obstructive conditioning (like the idea that our relationship with The Totality should be ´pure, spiritual, disembodied´, or ´distant, empty, neutral ´, and so on – and definitely not ´sexy´!) - and give themselves permission to really, really relax, and open, and become receptive ´all the way down´ (from their heads, through their genitals, to their toes) - they feel whole-body arousal – as if they were being penetrated by blessing. So relaxing into our actual experience (which is always in the present moment), not trying to achieve anything, doing nothing (just feeling), and letting ourselves be what we already are, is actually (paradoxically) a proactive process. Later on in that first essay I add that as we relax into The Erotic Embrace Of God or The Goddess we observe ´the monkey mind´ distracting us, and unintegrated shame, grief, fear and anger calling for our attention. And I advise that as we let ourselves Fall Into Love, we give generous space and kindness to everything that arises in our bodies, hearts and minds. So that gradually, gently, over time, our attention-capacity strengthens - and we find we are more and more uninterruptedly enjoying The Totality´s Embrace. All of those words are intended as guidance for opening to The Sacred Erotic Embrace – for softening into that awareness. Now, in Parts 2 and 3, I want to discuss that guidance in finer detail, and hopefully give some useful guidance for living in that awareness. MAKING LOVE WITH LIFE To act in the awareness we´re discussing is to Make Love With Life. To Make Love is not to have sex. They are not synonymous. They can coincide, but they are separable. We can Make Love while having sex, but we can have sex without Making Love. They can overlap. But Making Love can overlap with anything. To take some easy examples: we can Make Love with the music while dancing, we can Make Love with the earth and flowers and plants while gardening, we can Make Love with the water while swimming, we can Make Love with our food while eating. The quote at the beginning, from The Preface to ´The Conscious Tribe, A New Extended Family´ describes Making Love with a Lover. But we can Make Love, in exactly the same way, with everything, at all times. To the extent that we can enter spiritual nakedness (presence devoid of ideas), emotional nakedness (emotion unobstructed by conditioning), and physical nakedness – whether dressed or undressed - (sensation unobstructed by conditioning) we can enter into a loving ´conversation´ with everything. We can Make Love With Life. And it is not only possible to Make Love With Life, but my experience and assertion is that once we come to rest in The Erotic Spiritual Arms of The Great Mystery – we realise that Making Love With Life is our natural Way of Being. Then: just as we feel The Pulse of Life in our own body when we Make Love with a Lover - we feel the sacred-erotic pulse in our body at all times, everywhere. And just as when Making Love with a Lover we feel The Pulse of Life in our Lover´s body - we feel the sacred-erotic pulse inside everything, everywhere. When we rest in the Loving Embrace of The God or The Goddess, when we let that deliciousness, that grace, filter thrugh the cells of our body, not only (as I said in Part 1) does everything look look more beautiful, but we intuit that: “everything is ´made out of´ The Great Mystery. Everything therefore is The Great Mystery. Everything is therefore sacred. Matter is sacred. The material is not the opposite of the spiritual. As theistic traditions of self-knowledge would put it: The World is The Face of God.” The Conscious Tribe, A New Extended Family, Chapter 1 And just as we touch the face of a Lover with great tenderness – we touch everything with deep respect and care. The Face of God is everything – and we touch that face with tenderness. The quote at the beginning descibes a Love Making with a Lover in which our Individuality dances with our Oneness. In the same way, we enter ´a dance with life´: we feel our own, unique, undefinable, physical-spiritual energy – and we feel the undefinable, spiritual-physical energy pulsing though everything – through every other person, through every living creature, through every stone, through every human-made thing, through the air, through the daytime and the nightime – and inexplicably, somehow, through every situation. We feel the moment. We respond to it. The moment feels us and responds. We feel its response. We respond to its response - and it responds to us once again. A subtle, erotic-not-sexual, energetic dance takes place, a back and forth – a Love Making – between Ourselves and Others and Things and Situations - between Ourselves and Everything. The idea that the moment responds to us, or an inanimate object responds to us might sound odd. But let´s look at it through the eyes of Heraclitus´s famous phrase “you cannot visit the same river twice” (because the river will have changed). To which we could also add “you cannot visit the same river twice” (because, moment to moment, you are changing). So, for example: we are experiencing a situation as noisy, disturbing, and overwhelming – that´s the way it´s ´speaking to us´. Nevertheless, we feel it. We feel it fully. We feel it with our whole body. We feel the Undefinable Pulse of Life in it. And in ourselves. And as we feel, we Breathe Consciously. Until - perhaps only ten seconds later - having opened to the situation (not tried to repress it), not only do we not experience it as overwhelming, but we perceive its divinity. Then: we experience it for a second time. It ´speaks to us´ differently now - and we respond differently. And so ´the dialogue´, the relationship, The Love Making, continues – whether with a situation, an object, a tree, another animal, or another person. This for most of us is a completely new way-of-being: Making Love while washing up, while driving, at a meeting, in the shower, in a restaurant, in a bar, in a field, recycling, watching the stars... We begin to feel what its like to live in The Sacred Erotic Loving Embrace – to be both ´in spirit´ and in the body. To be feeling (not thinking) the moment. To not be walking a straight line towards our objectives, but to be caught up in a dance we don´t control. Finally – before we go on to discuss The Path of Making Love With Life – the perhaps never-ending, deepening, opening ´unlearning´ path of shedding layers of conditioned constriction – I just want to say that this essay is about understanding and experiencing Sacred Erotic Action (Making Love With Life). It is not about the ecological, social or political conesquences of such action. But it does have consequences in those areas. In fact, it has consequences in every area in which we relate. And politics are about how we relate. Commerce is about how we relate. Industrialisation and urbanisation are about how we relate. Ecology is about how we relate. Digitalisation is about how we relate. Is there any area of human interest that is not about how we relate?! Learning to Make Love with Life will affect everything we do. In essence (in every area of human interaction): it will moves us, organically, away from the desacralised, de-eroticised*, insensitive, unfeeling, synthetic environment and way-of-life - towards a more natural, appreciative, heart-open, sovereign and communal way-of-life. PREPARATION In Neo-Tantra (the modern cultural appropriation of the ancient Hindu/Buddhist/Taoist Tantric Path of Awakening, usually principally focused on our sexual healing), people talk about ´edging´ - by which they mean prolonging sexual pleasure by deliberately staying on the edge of orgasm. As we relax into Erotic Embodied Spiritual Awareness and learn to Make Love With Life we enter a state of pleasure that has moments of greater and lesser intensity, but which is not aiming at, or even on a journey towards, an orgasm of total understanding or illumination. It is a state of erotic blessedness without end. But how is this state sustained? Of the “thousands of ways to kneel and kiss the ground” (Rumi) - the thousands of techniques that could support us in continuously Making Love With Life - I am going to suggest Conscious Breathing – because that is what I have found (for myself, and for the people I guide) to be the simplest, most accessible and most powerful of all techniques. And I am going to recommend specific breathing patterns – that we can practice both in meditation and as we go about our everyday lives – that can keep us on that edge where the spiritual and the material meet. But before talking about how we stay on that blissful edge, I feel we have to ask how we get onto the edge in the first place! And that is not easy or quick. The Conscious Breathing is the easy part! 90% of The Path to Making Love With Life is getting onto the edge. Staying there by breathing consciously is just the last 10%! How do we get onto the edge? (1) By cultivating a direct, personal, felt experience of Spirit, Consciousness, God, The Great Mystery, (2) by cultivating an intricate, vulnerable familiarity with the woundings and tendencies of our own, conditioned psyche and personality, and (3) by cultivating an intimate awareness of how that conditioning lives and moves subtly within our body. And yes – this cultivation usually takes years. Not because it´s so complicated, but because almost all of us have been severely disassociated from ourselves. The proof of this being, for me – that we´re not in our natural state: we´re not (everywhere and always) Making Love With Life. Cultivation of these three aspects of our perceiving is like opening irrigation channels in our perceptual apparatus. We can then release our Conscious Breath along these channels – and connect both with The Great Mystery and with our embodied experience. For example: I experienced a lot of shame around my sexuality. And I held tension in my stomach that didn´t allow The Grace of God, The Blessings of The Goddess, The Timeless Bliss of Oneness to percolate down through the cells of my body, all the way into my genitals – and infuse my sexuality with divinity. So (1) I had to cultivate a strong felt-connection with God, (2) admit and understand my shame, and bring a non-judgmental, healing tenderness to that shame, and (3) recognise the rising and falling of the tension in my stomach, and learn to not resist it – until it relaxed and settled of its own accord. That is an example in relation to my sexuality. But the blockages can be anywhere in our bodies, and related to any facet of our lives. We might have had a negative experience of religion (for example), and dismissed spirituality – and be blocked in our connection with Great Mystery. Or we might be burdened by feelings of inferiority (or superiority) towards other people, and crumple (or bloat) in their presence – thus blocking the smooth flow of Sacred Energy through our hearts. Or we might be burdened by great fear, or stress - and hold our bodies stiffly and tightly. Or be burdened by grief, or depression – and hold our bodies weakly, sloppily. My point being – that our psychological and emotional conditioning blocks the flow of Sacred Erotic Energy through our bodies – and that (to return to the metaphor of irrigation systems) we need to connect to The Water Source (which, I´d say, is everywhere), and heal our personal mind-heart-body blockages – in order to be able to ´get onto the spirtual-material, sacred-erotic edge´ of Making Love With Life. Then we´re 90% there! Then we just need to breathe! Then all we need to do is stay there... EDGING FOREVER As I said, I recommend Conscious Breathing (as recommended by countless teachers in a wide range of traditions) as the most obvious choice of technique for maintining our balance on the ecstatic tightrope along which the glittering, sparkling currents of matter and spirit run both ways. How exactly do I recommend breathing consciously? There are two complimentary patterns I recommend – a vertical pattern and a horizontal pattern.** But the horizontal pattern depends upon previous practice of the vertical pattern. So first, the vertical pattern: Breathing on The Vertical Axis. (1) Inhale through the heart. Hold. Exhale up, out and around – into Everything, The Totality, The Great Sacred Mytery of Life. (2) Then as you inhale again, pull that breath back down to the heart. Hold it for a few seconds. Then release it again, but now: in and down – through your belly and penis/vagina, down your legs – into the ground. (3) Then as you inhale again, pull that breath back up to the heart. Hold it for a few seconds. Then release it up, out and around again. And repeat and repeat and repeat. Be aware of your spine. Let The Blessings of The Totality shower down through you (chakra by chakra, down your spine) saturating your sexuality. Let God, Goddess, Great Mystery rain blessings upon your wild, free, animal nature – upon your incarnation, your individuality, the Unique Expression of The Great Mystery that you are. Let the Earth Energies concentrated in your penis/vagina rise up through your body (chakra by chakra, up your spine - up and out through the top of your head) like an Offering to The Infinite Sacred Mystery. As you have received blessing, now offer yourself – offer everything you are – with gratitude, with no conditions attached, with no thought – shamelessly letting blessing fall upon your love and your lust, your tenderness and your ferocity, your freedom and your fear, your joy, your hatred, your pain, your wisdom, your confusion. Know that everything about you is sacred. Everything. Let God see you! Hide nothing! As the breath descends – be blessed. As the breath ascends – be an offering. This is the Vertical Axis Conscious Breathing Pattern I recommend. Is it always possible with this intensity? While driving? In the supermarket? Of course not. It is only natural, when we focus on something (looking up at a roadsign, selecting a product from the shop shelf, and so on) that we remove our focus from our breathing, at least to some extent. But however gently, however quietly (in a business meeting, in class, in the train...) – I suggest returning to this pattern again and again, and letting it hold you steady. Letting it become the backbone of your Sacred Erotic Life. Practice resting in the Arms of Great Mystery – as if Great Mystery was your Lover. Practice resting peacefully and contentedly in Your Lover´s Erotic Embrace. Live this breathing pattern – practice it in stillness, as a meditation – and practice it all day long: integrate it into your everyday life. When you practice it as a meditation you can sit (Buddhist meditation style), or stand and accompany your breathing with arm movements (Qigong style), or stand and move spontaneously (Expressive Dance style) – and in any of these styles you can also make noise! Releasing sound as you exhale, I have found, can be extremely liberating. Breathing on The Vertical Axis can open us into a relationship (an ´Inner Love Making´) with God, The Goddess, The Tao, The Great Mystery. We taked about ´never being able to visit the same river twice´ - about how the world is always changing, and we are always changing, and how we can experience an ´Outer Love Making´ when we stay present to the energetic ´conversation´ between the perceiver and the perceived. Similarly, internally, every time we exhale up-and-around we meet God anew. Our meeting has a new texture. And that new texture then inhabits our exhalation in-and-down through our bellies and genitals. When the energies in our bellies and gentials then receive this new energy-texture from God – they metamorphose, like clouds changing shape in the sky. They are transformed. And as we exhale up-and-around again, our exhalation carries that new, transformed, physical-erotic energy-texture into Arms of God... This is how Conscious Vertical Axis Breathing can take us into a continuous experience of Inner Love Making – which becomes the foundation of our Outer Love Making, our Making Love With Life. I say ´the foundation´ because learning to breathe on The Horizontal Axis is what then stabilises us in Making Love With Life. But I´ll leave it here for now. And we can discuss the Horizontal Axis in part 3. I feel there is already a lot to contemplate in all we have discussed – and a lot to practice! The Path of Making Love With Life will no doubt be a new approach for many people. It is not Judeo-Christian. It is not Buddhist. It is not traditional Tantra (focused on enlightenment and the transcendence of birth and death), or Neo-Tantra (focused on sexual healing). It has no end goal. It is about how we travel through life, not about where we´re going, or what we´re trying to achieve. It is not about belief. It is about Not Knowing – and feeling. It is based on the intuition of interconnection – the intuition that everything is connected to everything, and that therefore everything is relating with everything - and that the most complete and beautiful way to participate in this cosmic interrelating is to Make Love With Life! *** * When I describe the dominant global culture as ´de-eroticised´ I don´t mean it´s not sexualised. Of course it´s sexualised – hyper-sexualised. But that pornographic, objectifying, consuming sexuality (even with a sprinkling of tantrism or fetishism on top) has nothing whatsoever to do with the natural, spriritual eroticism of Making Love with Life we´re discussing. The dominant post-judeo-christian, materialistic culture is ´de-eroticised´ because it has alienated us from nature, taught us to dominate, control and train our bodies rather than how to follow them, taught us to objectify, standardise, evaluate, praise, shame and modify our bodies, and (as in Gerorge Orwell´s Doublespeak in his book ´1984´), removed the very concept of the innate, natural, physical-spiritual Pleasure of Being from the collective psyche. ** Both of these breathing patterns can be practiced within the Conscious Relating Meditation – a meditation practice that one does together with another person (or a group) that includes both silence and dialogue. En él describo mi experiencia personal de estar despertando en un mundo interconectado en el que todo se está relacionando con todo. * LA VIDA ERÓTICA DE UN MÍSTICO YO MÍSTICO ¿Por qué me defino como un místico? ¿Porque tengo pinta de místico? ¿Porque soy un anciano que vive solo, en el campo, desconectado de la red eléctrica, en una caravana? ¿Porque me lavo al aire libre, medito y rezo? No. Me defino como místico porque mi principal interés, de momento a momento, no está en lo que está sucediendo, ni siquiera en lo que estoy haciendo - sino en mi relación con La Totalidad (se llame como se llame). LA PREGUNTA DIFÍCIL Cuando alguien reza, siente que está en relación con La Totalidad / Dios / La Diosa / Gran Misterio - obviamente. Pero cuando alguien medita profundamente y ´se une con todo´, sigue presente la palabra ´con´. Es decir - sigue existiendo la sensación de estar en relación. Me interesa esta relación. Me interesa vivir en esta relación. Pero primero: la pregunta difícil (¡y puede que no te guste la respuesta!): ¿es real esta relación? Puedo sentir que estoy en relación con La Totalidad, o con mi Idea de Dios o la Diosa - pero ¿se siente estar en relación conmigo? O (para ser franco): ¿simplemente lo estoy imaginando? Podría darte respuestas ingeniosas sobre la infinita e interconectada complejidad de la existencia, y la necesidad de una inteligencia coordinadora - pero cualquier respuesta intelectual es tan fiable como el intelecto. Y el intelecto humano es claramente limitado. Así que seré honesto. Paso mis días sintiendo que estoy en comunión con La Totalidad. ¿Pero lo estoy realmente? ¡No tengo ni idea! ¡Ni siquiera sé cómo podría saberlo! Podría apelar a la objetividad de la intuición (“simplemente sé que es verdad”), o a la objetividad de la emoción (“sé que es verdad porque lo siento”) - pero, de nuevo, seamos honestos (sino, ¿qué sentido tiene hablar de estos asuntos? ¿para reafirmar nuestras ideas preconcebidas?): al igual que el intelecto, nuestras intuiciones y emociones también son subjetivas, condicionadas y falibles. Pero esas mismas dudas sobre la realidad de nuestra percepción se aplican a todo. ¡¿Cómo podemos estar seguros de nada?! ¡Percibimos todo a través de facultades limitadas, subjetivas, condicionadas y falibles! ¿Te ama tu pareja? Dice que sí. Tú lo sientes. ¿Pero de verdad? ¿Puedes probarlo? No. La verdad, creo, es que de lo único que podemos estar ciertos es de la incertidumbre. O, como se dice que declaró Sócrates: “soy el más sabio de todos, porque sé que no sé”. Vivimos dentro de Lo Desconocido. No sabemos dónde estamos, ni por qué. Ni siquiera percibimos el mundo directamente, sino que vemos su reflejo en la pantalla de la mente - y por lo tanto, ni siquiera podemos estar seguros de su realidad. Y así sucesivamente. ¿Qué hacer entonces? Como dijo Alan Watts: “hay que apostar”. Tu vida es tu ficha de apuesta, y tienes que decidir dónde ponerla - ya sea en el Significado Universal, en la Falta de Significado Universal, en el Hedonismo, en el Moralismo, en Tal o Cual Gurú, o en Tal Libro... Hay, por supuesto, muchas opciones. Así que he apostado, sí - por una relación cada vez más profunda con La Totalidad. Y además de seguir el consejo de Alan Watts, también sigo el de Joseph Campbell de “seguir tu dicha”. Y no habla de buscar el placer - sino de algo más difícil de definir: de seguir aquello que nos hace cantar el corazón, de seguir ´el llamado del alma´ (John O'Donohue), de seguir ´la decisión más íntima que no podemos sino obedecer´ (Leonard Cohen). Sigo mi dicha. ¡Y a medida que la sigo, la dicha aumenta! ¿Acaso eso demuestra la realidad de la Relación con la Totalidad? (“¿Ves? ¡La relación debe ser real, porque la dicha no deja de crecer!”) Para nada. ¡Podría ser que mi estado alucinatorio se está expandiendo! Pero, ¿cómo es realmente esta experiencia de relación para mí? Digo que es dichosa. ¿Qué más? ¿Qué experimento realmente? ¿Cómo es para mí, aquí en Lo Desconocido, habiendo apostado mi vida a la posibilidad de una relación real y recíproca con La Totalidad? EL ABRAZO ERÓTICO Los devotos de Krishna, los Sufíes, y místicos Cristianos como Teresa de Ávila y Juan de la Cruz han hablado de una conexión erótica con La Totalidad. Y hago esta ´apelación a la autoridad´ (“¡como podéis ver, no soy el único!”) porque soy consciente de que quienes hablan del Sexo con Dios (para ser directo) pueden ser fácilmente malinterpretados y descartados. Desconozco qué experimentaron exactamente esos místicos al sentir que se acercaban cada vez más a La Totalidad. Pero imagino que se sentían cada vez más excitados - en todo su cuerpo (no solo en los genitales). ¡Porque yo sí! Y he guiado a muchas personas por este camino. Y todas dicen - con sorprendente rapidez y sorprendente similitud - que al respirar conscientemente, al dirigir su atención a la carne - y al liberarse de condicionamientos obstructivos (como la idea de que la relación con La Totalidad debe ser ´pura, espiritual, desencarnada´, o ´distante, vacía, neutra´, etc. - ¡y definitivamente no ´sexy´!) - y al permitirse relajarse de verdad, y abrirse, y volverse receptivos ´hasta el fondo´ (desde la cabeza, pasando por los genitales, hasta los dedos de los pies) - ellas también experimentan una excitación corporal completa - como si la bendición las penetrara. Supongo que si mi referencia a místicos famosos fue una especie de ´apelación vertical a la autoridad´ - entonces haceros saber lo fácil que es para la mayoría de nosotros ser guiados hacia la Relación Erótica con La Totalidad es una especie de ´apelación horizontal a la autoridad´ - si me entendéis. Una vez más “¡como podéis ver, no soy el único!” Pero tengo (lo que considero) la buena fortuna de vivir en una propiedad privada rodeado de Robles, con Higueras y Cerezos, un perro, un huerto y gallinas - donde puedo vivir desnudo al aire libre - y donde no tengo que inclinarme ante el Dios del Reloj. Claro que los amigos van y vienen, tengo coche, y salgo a hacer recados, pero en general significa que (de la misma manera que acabo de explicar cómo guío a los demás) - puedo guiarme a tiempo completo hacia Los Brazos de La Totalidad. Digo ´Los Brazos de La Totalidad´ porque siento la presencia de La Totalidad como un abrazo erótico. A veces es como si estuviera detrás de mí, abrazándome por detrás (una Osa Madre tan Grande como el Cielo) - y otras veces siento que el abrazo me rodea por completo: aquí mismo, pero a la vez viniendo de todas partes - de tan lejos como puedo imaginar. En este abrazo me siento inamovible, inquebrantable, intrépido. Y a la vez, suave. Mi piel despierta - como si respondiera a una ternura en el aire. En mí surgen cualidades que solemos asociar con ´lo masculino´: me siento poderoso, completamente quieto, silencioso y sólido - y al mismo tiempo, siento lo que normalmente asociaríamos con un anhelo sexual ´femenino´: ser poseído, entregarme, rendirme, ser extasiado. Siento que vivir en la naturaleza ayuda. No puedo decir “todos deberían vivir en la naturaleza”, porque cada uno tiene su camino único - ¡¿y quién soy yo para decir lo que los demás deben o no deben hacer?! Pero para mí, hay una enorme diferencia entre sentirme en Los Brazos de Dios rodeado de edificios, farolas y tráfico - y sentirme en Los Brazos de Dios en la naturaleza - donde me siento ´una criatura más´ (como los árboles, los pájaros, los insectos) – todos despertándonos, quedándonos dormidos, despertándonos, quedándonos dormidos - todos respirando al unísono - El Pulso de la Vida animándonos a todos - el tierno Beso de la Vida atravesando cada cuerpo. Y (a diferencia del centro de la ciudad donde la gente está vestida elegantemente) ¡estamos todos desnudos juntos! ¡Los árboles están desnudos! ¡Los insectos están desnudos! ¡Las gallinas están desnudas! No estamos protegidos de Aquello que Nos está Respirando a Todos. Todos estamos entregados a ser-respirados. Algo que ninguno de nosotros comprende nos está permitiendo a todos estar vivos - manteniédonos vivos, momento a momento. ¡Es una Orgía de Vida salvaje! (De nuevo, no sé si es cierto o no, pero) ¡estoy convencido de que las demás criaturas también están excitadas! LA PALABRA ´A´ Y luego tenemos ´la palabra A´ - ¡Amor! Otra palabra delicada y fácilmente malinterpretable… Al profundizar mi relación con La Totalidad, mi cuerpo se abre - vivo en el placer erótico de pertenecer. Pero mi corazón también se abre. ¡Y eso también es muy, muy placentero! Reconozco mi No Saber - que (como hemos comentado) percibo mi propia realidad, única, limitada, condicionada y subjetiva. Reconozco que soy una criatura única. Y reconozco que todos, de todas las especies, también son únicos. Y así descanso en mi singularidad, en El Abrazo de la Totalidad - sintiendo que puedo tomar decisiones, pero que, en última instancia, no controlo nada (ni siquiera el funcionamiento de mi propio cuerpo). Y me siento feliz de no tener el control - feliz de estar envuelto en el Abrazo Erótico del Misterio Infinito de la Existencia. Desde allí, conozco a otras criaturas únicas... Ahora (porque me siento sostenido en mi singularidad) ya no compito con los demás, ni mido mi valía comparándome con ellos, ni necesito ni me resisto a su juicio, del mismo modo que no compito con los árboles, ni mido mi valía comparándome con los pájaros, ni necesito ni me resisto al juicio de los insectos. Todos somos únicos. Todos somos sostenidos. Cada uno es una maravilla, a su manera. Experimento el abrazo que nos sostiene a cada uno, y que nos sostiene a todos, como un Abrazo Amoroso. En él - me siento amado. Siento que soy amado por la criatura única que soy. Y como me siento relajado dentro de este amor - cuando conozco a otros, los amo. Amo, porque me siento amado. Como soy amado, amo. Veo a cada persona como única, y a cada persona Sostenida en el Abrazo Amoroso de La Totalidad - ya sea que esa sea su experiencia consciente o no. A mis ojos, son amados - como yo soy amado. Y como soy amado, yo los amo. Y hay una conexión, siento yo, de maneras que no pretendo comprender - entre el amor y la belleza. Al mirar el mundo desde El Abrazo Erótico y Amoroso de La Totalidad con ojos de amor - todo y todos se ven más brillantes, más radiantes, más hermosos. Y de nuevo, de maneras que no pretendo comprender - siento que esa belleza me nutre. Al igual que yo, las personas a las que he guiado también hablan (como dije antes: con sorprendente rapidez y de forma sorprendentemente similar) sobre dejar de competir con los demás (una vez que estén descansados dentro del Abrazo de La Totalidad) - sobre sentirse valorados como seres únicos y, por lo tanto, ser capaces de valorar a otros como seres únicos también - sobre sentirse amados y, por lo tanto, ser capaces de amar. Y sobre el embellecimiento del mundo. NADA QUE LOGRAR Mi interés radica en estar en relación con La Totalidad. Esto es muy diferente a querer alcanzar ´un nivel espiritual avanzado´, o algo por el estilo. Puedo estar en relación con La Totalidad - ahora mismo, tal como soy. Nunca estaré ´más en relación´ con La Totalidad de lo que estoy ahora. La relación podría profundizarse y madurar (espero que así sea) - pero eso será una evolución de la calidad de la relación - no de nuestra cercanía. ¡¿Cómo podría llegar a ser ´más parte de La Totalidad´ de lo que soy ahora?! Mi capacidad para mantenerme enfocado en sentir el Abrazo Amoroso y Erótico podría desarrollarse. Pero estoy convencido de que La Totalidad no me amará más (cuando mi capacidad-de-atención sea mayor), de lo que me ama ahora. Estoy convencido de que ya me ama totalmente. ¡¿Acaso amamos más a los adultos que a los adolescentes, a quienes amamos más que a los niños, a quienes amamos más que a los bebés?! ¡Por supuesto que no! Ni siquiera nosotros amamos en proporción a la madurez de la gente. Dicho esto - al relajarnos dentro del Abrazo Erótico, observamos como ´la mente de mono´ nos distrae, y cómo la vergüenza, el dolor, el miedo y la ira no integrados reclaman nuestra atención. Pero al permitirnos Caer dento del Amor, y brindamos un espacio generoso y bondadoso a todo lo que surge en nuestros cuerpos, corazones y mentes - gradualmente, suavemente, con el tiempo, nuestra capacidad-de-atención se fortalece, y descubrimos que estamos disfrutando con menos y menos interrupciones El Abrazo de La Totalidad. Siento que esto es importante porque muchos creemos que se necesita haver un esfuerzo para entrar en El Abrazo Erótico y Amoroso de la Totalidad - cuando, en mi opinión, todo esfuerzo es contra-producente. En otras palabras, como yo lo veo: ya somos Expresiones Únicas, o Manifestaciones Únicas, de La Totalidad. Ya pertenecemos. El erotismo continuo ya es nuestro derecho de nacimiento. Ya somos amados. No necesitamos lograr nada. Hablo del dichoso Abrazo Erótico de la Totalidad - y del Amor que emana de nosotros cuando nos sentimos Amados. Describo un estado de consciencia. En este ensayo (Parte 2), y en la Parte 3, quiero examinar ese estado de consciencia con mayor detenimiento. Y quiero preguntar cómo actúa esa consciencia. ¿Cómo nos comportamos a medida que este estado de consciencia madura en nuestro interior? (O ´a medida que maduramos dentro de este estado de consciencia´). Amamos - sí. Pero ¿cómo se manifiesta eso? ¿Significa que nos sentamos y miramos fijamente a lo lejos (pareciendo un poco colocados) todo el día? ¿Significa que nos volvemos pura dulzura y luz? ¿Significa que nunca nos enfadamos? ¿Qué significa ´Hacer el Amor Con la Vida´? ¿Significa que renunciamos a cualquier discriminación? ¿Significa que amamos todas las acciones por igual? ¿Significa esto que trascendemos todo debate ecológico y político? ¿Afecta vivir en El Sagrado Abrazo Erótico nuestra forma de comer, vestir, divertirnos - nuestro estilo de vida? ¿Empezamos a relacionarnos de manera diferente con las cosas (los objetos inanimados) de nuestra vida? ¿Nos volvemos promiscuos, o poliamorosos? ¿Cómo afecta a nuestra vida cotidiana vivir con tanto placer? CONCIENCIA SAGRADO-ERÓTICA En La Vida Erótica de un Místico (Parte 1) afirmo que, en mi opinión, ya formamos parte-de El Gran Misterio - ya pertenecemos - el erotismo sagrado continuo es nuestro derecho de nacimiento - ya somos amados: no hay nada que necesitemos alcanzar. Solo necesitamos suavizarnos, soltar, relajarnos y abrirnos - y sentir lo que ya somos. Hablo de cómo las personas a las que he guiado dicen que, al respirar conscientemente, y prestar atención a su cuerpo - y soltar condicionamientos obstructivos (como la idea de que nuestra relación con la Totalidad debería ser ´pura, espiritual, desencarnada´, o ´distante, vacía, neutral´, etc - ¡y definitivamente no ´sexy´!)— y permitirse relajarse de verdad, de verdad, y abrirse, y volverse receptivas ´de pies a cabeza´ (desde la cabeza, pasando por los genitales, hasta los dedos de los pies) - experimentan una excitación corporal completa - como si la bendición las penetrara. Así que relajarnos dentro de nuestra experiencia verdadera (que siempre está en el momento presente), no intentar lograr nada, hacer nada (solo sentir), y permitirnos ser lo que ya somos, es en realidad (paradójicamente) un proceso proactivo. Más adelante en ese primer ensayo añado que al relajarnos en el Abrazo Erótico de Dios o la Diosa, observamos cómo ´la mente mono´ nos distrae, y cómo la vergüenza, el dolor, el miedo y la ira no integrados reclaman nuestra atención. Aconsejo que, al permitirnos Caer dentro del Amor, brindemos un espacio generoso y bondadoso a todo lo que surja en nuestro cuerpo, corazón y mente. De esta manera, gradualmente, con suavidad, nuestra capacidad-de-atención se fortalece - y descubrimos que disfrutamos con cada vez menos interrupción El Abrazo de la Totalidad. Todas esas palabras pretenden ser una guía para abrirnos al Sagrado Abrazo Erótico - para entrar suavemente en esa consciencia. Ahora, en las Partes 2 y 3, quiero hablar de esa guía con más detalle, y (espero) ofrecer algunos consejos útiles para poder vivir en esa consciencia. HACER EL AMOR CON LA VIDA Actuar con la consciencia de la que hablamos es Hacer el Amor Con la Vida. Hacer el Amor no es tener sexo. No son sinónimos. Pueden coincidir, pero son separables. Podemos Hacer el Amor mientras tenemos sexo, pero podemos tener sexo sin Hacer el Amor. Pueden superponerse. Pero Hacer el Amor puede superponerse con cualquier cosa. Por poner algunos ejemplos sencillos: podemos Hacer el Amor con la música mientras bailamos, podemos Hacer el Amor con la tierra, las flores y las plantas mientras hacemos jardinería, podemos Hacer el Amor con el agua mientras nadamos, podemos Hacer el Amor con nuestra comida mientras comemos. La cita del principio, del Prefacio de ´La Tribu Consciente: Una Nueva Familia Extendida´, describe Hacer el Amor con un Amante. Pero podemos Hacer el Amor, de exactamente la misma manera, con todo, en todo momento. En la medida en que podemos entrar en la desnudez espiritual (la presencia libre de ideas), la desnudez emocional (el sentimiento sin obstrucciones del condicionamiento), y la desnudez física - ya sea vestidos o no vestidos – (la sensación sin obstrucciones del condicionamiento), podemos entablar una amorosa ´conversación´ con todo. Podemos Hacer el Amor Con la Vida. Y no solo es posible Hacer el Amor Con la Vida, sino que mi experiencia y afirmación es que, una vez que descansamos en Los Brazos Eróticos Espirituales del Gran Misterio – nos damos cuenta de que Hacer el Amor Con la Vida es nuestra Manera de Ser natural. Entonces: tal como sentimos el Pulso de la Vida en nuestro propio cuerpo cuando Hacemos el Amor con un Amante - sentimos el pulso sagrado-erótico en nuestro cuerpo en todo momento, y en todas partes. Y tal como cuando Hacemos el Amor con un Amante sentimos el Pulso de la Vida en el cuerpo de nuestro Amante - sentimos el pulso sagrado-erótico dentro de todo, en todas partes. Cuando descansamos en el Amoroso Abrazo del Dios o la Diosa, cuando permitimos que esa exquisitez, esa gracia, se filtre a través de las células de nuestro cuerpo, no solo (como dije en la Parte 1) todo se ve más bello, sino que intuimos que: “todo ´está hecho de´ El Gran Misterio. Por lo tanto, todo es El Gran Misterio. Por lo tanto, todo es sagrado. La materia es sagrada. Lo material no es lo opuesto a lo espiritual. Como dirían las tradiciones teístas del auto-conocimiento: El Mundo es el Rostro de Dios”. La Tribu Consciente, Una Nueva Familia Extendida, Capítulo 1 Y tal como tocamos el rostro de un Amante con gran ternura - tocamos todo con profundo respeto y cuidado. El Rostro de Dios es todo - y tocamos ese rostro con ternura. La cita del principio describe un Hacer el Amor con un Amante en el que nuestra Individualidad baila con nuestra Unidad. De la misma manera, entramos en ´un baile con la vida´: sentimos nuestra propia energía única e indefinible, físico-espiritual - y sentimos la indefinible energía físico-espiritual palpitando en todo – en cada persona, en cada ser vivo, en cada piedra, en cada objeto creado por el ser humano, en el aire, en el día y en la noche - e inexplicablemente, de alguna manera, en cada situación. Sentimos el momento. Respondemos a él. El momento nos siente y responde. Sentimos su respuesta. Respondemos a su respuesta - y nos responde de nuevo. Surge un baile sutil, erótico-no-sexual, energético, un intercambio - un Hacer el Amor - entre Nosotros y los Demás y las Cosas y las Situaciones - entre Nosotros y Todo. La idea de que el momento nos responda, o que un objeto inanimado nos responda, puede sonar extraña. Pero veámoslo a través de la famosa frase de Heráclito “tu no puedes visitar el mismo río dos veces” (porque el río habrá cambiado). A lo que podríamos añadir “tu no puedes visitar el mismo río dos veces” (porque, momento a momento, tu cambias). Así que, por ejemplo: experimentamos una situación como ruidosa, perturbadora y abrumadora - así es como ´nos está hablando´. Sin embargo, la sentimos. La sentimos plenamente. La sentimos con todo nuestro cuerpo. Sentimos el Pulso Indefinible de la Vida en ella. Y en nosotros mismos. Y mientras la sentimos, Respiramos Conscientemente. Hasta que - quizás solo diez segundos después - al abrirnos a la situación (sin intentar reprimirla), no solo dejamos de experimentarla como abrumadora, sino que percibimos su divinidad. Luego: la experimentamos por segunda vez. Ahora ´nos habla´ de forma diferente - y nosotros respondemos de forma diferente. Así pues, ´el diálogo´, la relación, El Hacer el Amor, continúa - ya sea con una situación, un objeto, un árbol, otro animal, u otra persona. Para la mayoría de nosotros, esta es una manera-de-ser completamente nueva: Hacer el Amor mientras lavamos los platos, mientras conducimos, en una reunión, en la ducha, en un restaurante, en un bar, en el campo, reciclando, contemplando las estrellas... Empezamos a sentir lo que es vivir en El Abrazo Sagrado Erótico Amoroso - estar tanto ´en espíritu´ como en cuerpo. Sentir (no pensar) el momento. No caminar en línea recta hacia nuestros objetivos, sino dejarnos llevar por un baile que no controlamos. Finalmente, antes de continuar y hablar sobre El Camino de Hacer el Amor Con la Vida - el camino quizás-sin-fin de profundizar y abrirnos y ´desaprender´, de desprendernos de capas de constricción condicionada - solo quiero decir que este ensayo trata decomprender y experimentar la Acción Erótica Sagrada (Hacer el Amor Con la Vida). No trata sobre las consecuencias ecológicas, sociales o políticas de tal acción. Pero sí tiene consecuencias en esos ámbitos. De hecho, tiene consecuencias en todos los ámbitos en los que nos relacionamos. Hasta la política trata sobre cómo nos relacionamos. El comercio trata sobre cómo nos relacionamos. La industrialización y la urbanización tratan sobre cómo nos relacionamos. La ecología trata sobre cómo nos relacionamos. La digitalización trata sobre cómo nos relacionamos. ¡¿Existe algún ámbito de interés humano que no trate sobre cómo nos relacionamos?! Aprender a Hacer el Amor Con la Vida afectará todo lo que hacemos. En esencia (en cada ámbito de interacción humana): nos alejará, de forma orgánica, del entorno y manera-de-vivir sintéticos, desacralizados, deserotizados*, insensibles y entumecidos, hacia una manera-de-vivir más natural, llena de agradecimiento, abierta de corazón, soberana y comunitaria. PREPARACIÓN En el Neo-Tantra (la apropiación cultural moderna del antiguo camino Tántrico Hindú/Budista/Taoísta del despertar, generalmente enfocado principalmente en la sanación sexual), se habla de ´bordear´ (´edging´ en Inglés), con el significado de prolongar el placer sexual permaneciendo deliberadamente al borde del orgasmo. Al relajarnos dentro de la Conciencia Erótica Espiritual Encarnada y aprender a Hacer el Amor Con la Vida, entramos en un estado de placer con momentos de mayor y menor intensidad - pero que no busca, ni se dirige hacia, un orgasmo de entendimiento total o iluminación . Es un estado de dicha erótica sin fin. Pero, ¿cómo se mantiene este estado? De las "miles de maneras de arrodillarse y besar la tierra" (Rumi) – de las miles de técnicas que podrían ayudarnos a Hacer el Amor Con la Vida continuamente - voy a sugerir la Respiración Consciente - porque es la que he encontrado (para mí, y para las personas a las que guío) como la más simple, accesible y poderosa de todas las técnicas. Y voy a recomendar patrones de respiración específicos - que podemos practicar tanto en la meditación como en nuestra vida cotidiana - que nos permiten mantenernos en aquel borde donde lo espiritual y lo material se encuentran. Pero antes de hablar de cómo permanecer en este borde dichoso, creo que debemos preguntarnos cómo llegamos al borde en primer lugar. Y eso no es fácil ni rápido. ¡La Respiración Consciente es la parte fácil! El 90% del Camino para Hacer el Amor Con la Vida consiste en llegar al borde. ¡Mantenerse allí respirando conscientemente es solo el 10% restante! ¿Cómo llegamos al borde? (1) Cultivando una experiencia directa, personal y sentida del Espíritu, la Conciencia, Dios, el Gran Misterio, (2) cultivando una familiaridad intrincada y vulnerable con las heridas y tendencias de nuestra propia psique y personalidad condicionadas, y (3) cultivando una conciencia íntima de cómo ese condicionamiento vive y se mueve sutilmente dentro de nuestro cuerpo. Y sí - este cultivo suele llevar años. No porque sea tan complicado, sino porque casi todos hemos estado profundamente desconectados de nosotros mismos. La prueba de ello, para mí, es - que no estamos en nuestro estado natural: no estamos (en todas partes y siempre) Haciendo el Amor Con la Vida. Cultivar estos tres aspectos de nuestra percepción es como abrir canales de irrigación en nuestro aparato perceptivo. Podemos entonces soltar nuestra Respiración Consciente a través de estos canales - y conectar tanto con El Gran Misterio como con nuestra experiencia encarnada. Por ejemplo: yo sentía mucha vergüenza en torno a mi sexualidad. Y acumulaba tensión en el estómago que impedía que la Gracia de Dios, las Bendiciones de la Diosa, la Dicha Eterna de la Unidad fluyeran a través de las células de mi cuerpo, hasta mis genitales - e infundieran mi sexualidad con divinidad. Así que (1) tuve que cultivar una fuerte conexión-sentida con Dios, (2) admitir y comprender mi vergüenza, y aportarla una ternura sanadora y sin prejuicios, y (3) reconocer la tensión en mi estómago, que aumentaba y disminuía, y aprender a no resistirme a ella - hasta que se relajara y se calmara por sí sola. Este es un ejemplo relacionado con mi sexualidad. Pero los bloqueos pueden estar en cualquier parte de nuestro cuerpo, y relacionados con cualquier aspecto de nuestra vida. Podríamos haber tenido una experiencia negativa con la religión (por ejemplo) - y haber rechazado la espiritualidad, bloqueando así nuestra conexión con El Gran Misterio. O podríamos estar agobiados por sentimientos de inferioridad (o superioridad) hacia los demás, y sentirnos arrugados (o hinchados) en su presencia - impidiendo el flujo armonioso de la Energía Sagrada a través de nuestros corazones. O podríamos sentirnos abrumados por mucho miedo, o estrés - y mantener nuestros cuerpos rígidos y tensos. O sentirnos abrumados por la pena o la depresión - y mantener nuestros cuerpos débiles y flojos. Mi punto es - que nuestro condicionamiento psicológico y emocional bloquea el flujo de Energía Erótica Sagrada a través de nuestros cuerpos, y que (retomando la metáfora de los sistemas de irrigación) necesitamos conectarnos con la Fuente de Agua (que, diría yo, está en todas partes), y sanar nuestros bloqueos personales de mente-corazón-cuerpo - para poder ´llegar al borde´ espiritual-material, sagrado-erótico de Hacer el Amor Con la Vida. ¡Entonces estaremos al 90%! ¡Solo nos queda respirar! Entonces, lo único que tenemos que hacer es sostenernos allí... BORDEANDO POR SIEMPRE Como ya mencioné, recomiendo la Respiración Consciente (al igual que innumerables maestros de diversas tradiciones) como la técnica más obvia para mantener el equilibrio en la cuerda floja extática por la que fluyen en ambas direcciones las corrientes brillantes y centelleantes de la materia y el espíritu. ¿Cómo recomiendo exactamente la respiración consciente? Recomiendo dos patrones complementarios - uno vertical y otro horizontal.** Sin embargo, el patrón horizontal depende de la práctica previa del patrón vertical. Así que, primero, el patrón vertical: Respiración en El Eje Vertical. (1) Inhala a través del corazón. Mantén la respiración. Exhala hacia arriba, hacia afuera y alrededor - hacia Todo, La Totalidad, El Gran Misterio Sagrado de la Vida. (2) Luego, al inhalar de nuevo, lleva esa respiración de vuelta al corazón. Mantén la respiración durante unos segundos. Luego, exhala de nuevo, pero ahora: hacia adentro y abajo - a través del vientre y el pene/vagina, por las piernas - a la tierra. (3) Luego al inhalar de nuevo, lleva esa respiración de vuelta al corazón. Mantén la posición unos segundos – y luego suéltala hacia arriba, hacia afuera y alrededor, otra vez. Y repite, repite y repite. Sé consciente de tu columna vertebral. Deja que las Bendiciones de la Totalidad caigan como lluvia a través de ti (chakra por chakra, por tu columna) saturando tu sexualidad. Deja que Dios, la Diosa, El Gran Misterio derrame bendiciones sobre tu naturaleza animal salvaje y libre - sobre tu encarnación, tu individualidad, la Expresión Única del Gran Misterio que eres. Deja que las Energías de la Tierra concentradas en tu pene/vagina asciendan por tu cuerpo (chakra por chakra, por tu columna - hacia arriba y afuera por la parte superior de tu cabeza) como una Ofrenda al Infinito Misterio Sagrado. Como has recibido bendición, ahora ofrécete - ofrece todo lo que eres - con gratitud, sin condiciones, sin pensar - dejando la bendición caer sin verguenza sobre tu amor y tu lujuria, tu ternura y tu ferocidad, tu libertad y tu miedo, tu alegría, tu odio, tu dolor, tu sabiduría, tu confusión. Sabe que todo lo que eres es sagrado. Todo. ¡Deja que Dios te vea! ¡No ocultes nada! Al descender la respiración - sé bendecido. Al ascender la respiración - sé una ofrenda. Este es el Patrón de Respiración Consciente del Eje Vertical que recomiendo. ¿Es siempre posible con esta intensidad? ¿Mientras conducimos? ¿En el supermercado? Por supuesto que no. Es natural que, al concentrarnos en algo (mirando una señal de tráfico, eligiendo un producto en la estantería, etc.), desviemos nuestra atención de la respiración, al menos en cierta medida. Pero, por suave y silenciosa que sea la forma (en una reunión de trabajo, en clase, en el tren...) - sugiero volver a este patrón una y otra vez, y dejar que te sostenga. Que se convierta en la columna vertebral de tu Sagrada Vida Erótica. Practica descansar en los Brazos del Gran Misterio - como si El Gran Misterio fuera tu Amante. Practica descansar en paz y con satisfacción en el Abrazo Erótico de tu Amante. Vive este patrón de respiración - practícalo en quietud, como una meditación - y practícalo durante todo el día: intégralo en tu vida cotidiana. Cuando lo practiques como meditación, puedes sentarte (estilo meditación Budista), ponerte de pie y acompañar tu respiración con movimientos de los brazos (estilo Qigong), o ponerte de pie y moverte espontáneamente (estilo Danza Expresiva). ¡Y en cualquiera de estos estilos también puedes hacer ruido! En mi experiencia, soltar sonido al exhalar puede ser extremadamente liberador. Respirar en El Eje Vertical puede abrirnos a una relación (un ´Hacer el Amor Interno´) con Dios, la Diosa, el Tao, el Gran Misterio. Hablamos de como ´no se puede visitar el mismo río dos veces´ - de cómo el mundo está siempre cambiando y nosotros estamos siempre cambiando, y de cómo podemos experimentar un ´Hacer el Amor Externo´ cuando permanecemos presentes en la ´conversación´ energética entre el que percibe y lo percibido. De manera similar, internamente, cada vez que exhalamos hacia arriba-y-alrededor, nos encontramos con Dios de manera nueva. Nuestro encuentro tiene una nueva textura. Y esa nueva textura habita nuestra exhalación hacia adentro-y-abajo, a través de nuestro vientre y genitales. Luego cuando las energías en nuestro vientre y genitales reciben esta nueva textura-energética de Dios - se metamorfosean, como nubes cambiando de forma en el cielo. Se transforman. Y al exhalar de nuevo hacia arriba-y-alrededor, nuestra exhalación lleva esa nueva y transformada energía físico-erótica a los Brazos de Dios... Así es como la Respiración Consciente del Eje Vertical puede llevarnos a una experiencia continua de Hacer el Amor Internamente - lo cual será la base de nuestro Hacer el Amor Externamente, nuestro Hacer el Amor Con la Vida. Digo ´la base´ porque aprender a respirar en El Eje Horizontal es lo que nos estabiliza en nuestro Hacer el Amor Con la Vida. Pero lo dejaré aquí por ahora. Podemos hablar del Eje Horizontal en la Parte 3. Siento que ya hay mucho que contemplar en todo lo que hemos comentado - ¡y mucho que practicar! El Camino de Hacer el Amor Con la Vida será sin duda un nuevo enfoque para muchas personas. No es Judeo-Cristiano. No es Budista. No es el Tantra tradicional (enfocado en la iluminación, y la trascendencia del nacimiento y la muerte), ni el Neo-Tantra (enfocado en la sanación sexual). No tiene un fin último. Se trata de cómo transitamos por la vida, no de adónde vamos, ni de qué intentamos lograr. No se trata de creencias. Se trata de No Saber - y de sentir. Se basa en la intuición de la interconexión - la intuición de que todo está conectado con todo y, por lo tanto, todo se está relacionando con todo - y que la forma más completa y hermosa de participar en esta interrelación cósmica ¡es Hacer el Amor Con la Vida! *** * Cuando describo la cultura global dominante como ´deserotizada´, no me refiero a que no esté sexualizada. Por supuesto que está sexualizada - hiper-sexualizada. Pero esa sexualidad pornográfica, objetificadora y consumista (incluso con un toque de tantrismo o fetichismo por encima), no tiene absolutamente nada que ver con el erotismo natural y espiritual de Hacer el Amor Con la Vida del que estamos hablando. La cultura dominante post-judeo-cristiana y materialista está ´deserotizada´ porque nos ha alienado de la naturaleza, nos ha enseñado a dominar, controlar y entrenar nuestros cuerpos en lugar de a seguirlos, nos ha enseñado a objetificar, estandarizar, evaluar, alabar, avergonzar y modificar nuestros cuerpos, y (como en ´el doble lenguaje´ (Doublespeak) de George Orwell en su libro ´1984´) ha eliminado el concepto mismo del Placer de Ser innato, natural, físico-espiritual de la psique colectiva. ** Ambos patrones de respiración se pueden practicar dentro de la Meditación de las Relaciones Conscientes - una práctica de meditación que se realiza junto con otra persona (o un grupo) e incluye tanto silencio como diálogo. This is the most intimate article I've ever written. In it I describe my personal experience of awakening in an interconnected world in which everything is relating with everything. THE EROTIC LIFE OF A MYSTIC I MYSTIC Why do I define myself as a mystic? Because I look like one? Because I´m an old man living by myself, out in the countryside, off-grid, in a caravan? Because I wash outside, and meditate and pray? No. I define myself as a mystic because my primary moment-to-moment interest is not in what´s happening, or even in what I´m doing – but in my relationship with The Totality (by whatever name). THE DIFFICULT QUESTION When somebody prays, they feel they are in relationship with The Totality / God / Goddess / Great Mystery - obviously. But when somebody meditates deeply and “becomes one with everything”, there´s still the “with” word. That´s to say - there´s still a feeling of being in relationship. I am interested in this relationship. I am interested in living in this relationship. But first: the difficult question (and you might not like the answer!): is this relationship real? I might feel I am in relationship with The Totality, or my Idea of God or The Goddess – but does It feel Itself to be in relationship with me? Or (to be blunt): am I just imagining it? I could give you clever answers about the infinite, interconnected complexity of existence, and the necessity of a coordinating intelligence – but any intellectual answer is only as reliable as the intellect. And the human intellect is clearly limited. So let me be honest. I spend my days feeling I am in communion with The Totality. But am I really? I have no idea! Nor do I know how I could know! I could make an appeal to the objectivity of intuition (“I just somehow know it to be true”), or to the objectivity of emotion (“I know it to be true because I can feel it”) - but, again, let´s be honest (otherwise what´s the point of discussing these matters: to just affirm each other´s preconceptions?): like the intellect, our intuitions and emotions are also subjective, conditioned and fallible. But the exact same doubts about the reality of our perception apply to everything. How can we be certain of anything?! We perceive everything through limited, subjective, conditioned, fallible faculties! Does your lover love you? They say they do. You feel they do. But do they really? Can you prove it? No. The truth of the matter, I believe, is that the only thing we can be certain of is uncertainty. Or, as Socrates reportedly declared “I am the wisest of all, because I know I don´t know”. We live in The Unknown. We don´t know where we are, or why. We don´t even perceive the world directly, but see its reflection on the screen of the mind – and therefore can´t even be certain of its reality. And so on. So what to do? As Alan Watts said “you´ve got to place your bet”. Your life is your betting chip, and you have to decide where to place it – whether on Universal Meaning or Universal Meaninglessness or Hedonism or Moralism or Guru Whoever or That Book... There are, of course, plenty of options. So I have placed my bet, yes – on an ever-deepening relationship with The Totality. And as well as following Alan Watt´s advice, I also follow Joseph Campbell´s advice to “follow your bliss”. And he´s not talking about pleasure-seeking - he´s talking about something less easily defined: following that which makes our heart sing, following “the call of the soul” (John O´Donohue), following “the innermost decision that we cannot but obey” (Leonard Cohen). I follow my bliss. And as I follow, the bliss increases! Does that prove the reality of Relationship with The Totality? (“You see – the relationship must be real, because the bliss just grows and grows!”) Not at all. It might just be that my hallucinatory state is expanding! But what, for me, is this experience of relationship really like? I say it´s blissful. What else? What do I actually experience? What´s it like, for me, here in The Unknown, having placed my life-bet on the possibility of a real, reciprocatory relationship with The Totality? THE EROTIC EMBRACE The devotees of Krishna, the Sufis, and Christian mystics like Teresa of Avila and John of The Cross have all spoken of an erotic connection with The Totality. And I make this ´appeal to authority´ (“you see, it´s not just me!”) because I am aware that people who speak about Sex with God (to be direct) can be easily misunderstood, and easily dismissed. I don´t know exactly what those mystics experienced as they felt they were getting closer and closer to The Totality. But I imagine they felt more and more aroused – throughout their bodies (not just genitally). Because I do! And I have guided many people along this path. And they all say - remarkably quickly and remarkably similarly – that as they breathe consciously, and bring their attention to their flesh – and let go of obstructive conditioning (like relationship with The Totality should be ´pure, spiritual, disembodied´, or ´distant, empty, neutral ´, and so on – and definitely not ´sexy´!) - and give themselves permission to really, really relax, and open, and become receptive ´all the way down´ (from their heads, through their genitals, to their toes) - they too feel whole-body arousal – as if they were being penetrated by blessing. I suppose that if my reference to famous mystics was a kind of ´vertical appeal to authority´ - then letting you know how easily most of us can be guided into the Erotic Relationship with The Totality is a kind of ´horizontal appeal to authority´- if you know what I mean. Once again “you see, it´s not just me!” But I do have (what I consider to be) the good fortune to live on private land surrounded by Oaks - with Fig and Cherry Trees, and a dog, an allotment and chickens - where I can live naked outside - and where I don´t have to bow before The Clock God. Of course friends come and go, and I have a car, and drive off on errands, but generally it means that (in the way that I just explained I guide others) – I can guide myself full-time into The Arms of The Totality. I say ´The Arms of The Totality´ because I feel the presence of The Totality as an erotic embrace. Sometimes it´s more as if It is behind me, holding me from behind (a Mama Bear as Big as The Sky) – and sometimes it feels as if the embrace is all around me: right here, yet coming from everywhere – from as far away as I can imagine. In this embrace I feel immovable, unshakeable, fearless. Yet also soft. My skin wakes up – as if responding to a tenderness in the air. Qualities we usually associate as ´masculine´ arise in me: I feel powerful, absolutely still, silent, and solid – and at the same time I also feel what we would usually associate as a ´feminine´ sexual longing - to be taken, to give myself, to surrender, to be enraptured. I do feel living in nature helps. I can´t say “everyone should live in nature”, because everyone has their unique path – and who am I to say what others should or shouldn´t do?! But for me, there´s a huge difference between feeling myself in The Arms of God while surrounded by buildings, street lights and traffic – and feeling myself in The Arms of God in nature – where I feel myself to be ´just another creature´ (like the trees, the birds, the insects) – all waking, sleeping, waking, sleeping - all breathing together – The Pulse of Life enlivening us all – the tender Kiss of Life passing through every body. And (in contrast to the fashionably attired city centre) we´re all naked together! The trees are naked! The insects are naked! The chickens are naked! We´re not defended from That Which is Breathing Us All. We´re all surrendered to being-breathed. Something none of us understands is allowing us to all be alive - is keeping us all alive, moment-to-moment. It´s a wild Orgy of Life! (Again – I don´t know if it´s true or not, but) I am convinced the other creatures are all aroused too! THE L WORD And then there´s ´the L word´ - Love! Another delicate and easily misconstrued piece of language... As I enter ever-deeper relationship with The Totality, my body opens – I live in the erotic pleasure of belonging. But my heart opens too. And that is very, very pleasurable too! I recognise my Not Knowing – that (as we have discussed) I am perceiving my own, unique, limited, conditioned, subjective reality. I recognise I am a unique creature. And I recognise that everyone, of every species, is unique too. And so I rest in my uniqueness, in The Totality´s Embrace – feeling I can make choices, but that, ultimately, I´m not in control of anything (even the functioning of my own body). And I feel happy to not be in control - happy to be held in the Erotic Embrace of The Infinite Mystery of Existence. From there, I meet other unique creatures... Now (because I feel held in my uniqueness) I don´t compete with other people, or measure my worth by comparing myself with them, or require or resist their judgement – just as I don´t compete with the trees, or measure my worth comparing myself with the birds, or require or resist the judgement of the insects. We are all unique. We are all held. Everyone is a wonder, in their own way. I experience the embrace that holds each of us, and holds us all, as a Loving Embrace. In it - I feel loved. I feel I am loved as the unique creature I am. And because I am relaxed inside this love – when I meet others, I love them. I love, because I feel loved. As I am loved, I love. I see everyone as unique, and everyone as Held in the Loving Embrace of The Totality – whether that´s their conscious experience or not. In my eyes, they are loved – as I am loved. And as I am loved, I love them. And there is a connection, I feel, in ways I don´t pretend to understand - between love and beauty. As I look out from The Erotic and Loving Holding of The Totality with eyes of love – everyone and everything looks brighter, more radiant, more beautiful. And again, in ways I don´t pretend to understand - I feel that that beauty feeds me. Like me, people I have guided also talk (as I said before: remarkably quickly and remarkably similarly) about no longer being in competition with others (once they´re rested in The Totality´s Embrace) – about feeling valued as unique beings, and therefore being able to value others as unique beings too – about feeling loved, and therefore being able to love. And about the beautification of the world. NOTHING TO ACHIEVE My interest is in being in relationship with The Totality. That is very different from wanting to become ´spiritually advanced´, or some such thing. I can be in relationship with The Totality - now, as I am. I won´t ever be ´more in relationship´ with The Totality than I am now. The relationship might deepen and mature (I hope it will) – but that will be an evolution of the quality of the relationship – not of our proximity. How I can ever become ´more part of The Totality´ than I am now?! My capacity to remain focussed on feeling The Erotic Loving Embrace might develop. But I am convinced that The Totality will not love me more (when my attention-capacity is stronger), than it does now. I am convinced that It already loves me totally. Do we love adults more than we love adolescents, who we love more than we love children, who we love more than we love babies?! Of course not! Even we don´t love in proportion to people´s maturity. That said – as we relax into The Erotic Embrace we observe ´the monkey mind´ distracting us, and unintegrated shame, grief, fear and anger calling for our attention. But as we let ourselves Fall Into Love, and give generous space and kindness to everything that arises in our bodies, hearts and minds - gradually, gently, over time, our attention-capacity strengthens, and we find we are more and more uninterruptedly enjoying The Totality´s Embrace. I feel this is important because many of us feel we need to make an effort to enter the Erotic and Loving Embrace of The Totality – when, in my opinion, all effort is counter-productive. In other words, as I see it: we already are Unique Expressions, or Unique Manifestations, of The Totality. We already belong. Continuous eroticism is already our birthright. We´re already loved. We don´t need to achieve anything. En consonancia con la luminosidad que trae consigo el verano - el título de este boletín es “claridad” - porque en los últimos meses El Movimiento Tribus Conscientes ha alcanzado una nueva claridad - una claridad que me parece muy emocionante. Un Nombre Nuevo Esta nueva claridad se refleja en los cambios de nombre que hemos llevado a cabo. Pasamos de ´Tribus Conscientes´ a ´Tribus de Relaciones Conscientes´ y, más recientemente, a ´Tribus de Despertar a Través de las Relaciones´ (con el eslogan ´combinando la transformación personal y social´). Y aunque este nuevo nombre y eslogan son un poco largos - también expresan nuestra nueva claridad. Comunican con claridad de qué se trata todo esto. Dentro de la lata hay alubias cocidas - ¡y en la etiqueta pone ´alubias cocidas! Claridad. ¿Habrá menos gente interesada? Creo que sí. Probablemente. Creo que quizá habría atraído a más gente el nombre más general ´Tribus Conscientes´ - pero parte de nuestra nueva claridad radica en que no nos interesan las cifras. No nos interesa la cantidad. La propuesta de las Tribus de Despertar a Través de las Relaciones es, en mi opinión, una propuesta muy madura, profunda, de corazón y entera - y espero que este nuevo nombre atraiga a personas que lo perciban así. ¡Ya veremos! Formación de Tribus y Solo Formación de Tribus Otro aspecto de esta nueva claridad es que, a partir de ahora, solo vamos a apoyar a las personas en la creación de tribus. Appropriately for the brightness that comes with the summer - the title of this newsletter is ´clarity´- because over the last few months The Conscious Tribes Movement has arrived at a new clarity - a clarity I find very exciting. A New Name This new clarity is reflected in the name changes we have undergone. We changed from ´Conscious Tribes´ to ´Conscious Relating Tribes´ and then, most recently, to ´Tribes of Awakening Through Relating´ (with the tagline ´combining personal & social transformation´). And while this new name and tagline are a bit of a mouthful – they also express our new clarity. They communiacte clearly what we´re about. Inside the tin there are baked beans - and on the label it says ´baked beans´! Clarity. Will less people be interested? I think so. Probably. I think more people might have been attracted to the more general name ´Conscious Tribes´ - but part of our new clarity is that we´re not interested in numbers. We´re not interested in quantity. The Tribes of Awakening Through Relating proposal is, in my opinion, a very mature, deep, heartful, whole proposal – and I hope that this new name will attract people who sense that. We shall see! Forming Tribes and Only Forming Tribes Another aspect of this new clarity is that we are now only going to support people in forming tribes. Previously we´ve offered relational support for couples, and online groups to explore conscious relating (because, obviously, the quality of our relating is core to our mission) - but from now on, w e´re only going to offer this support within the context of helping people form and develop their own tribes. Until now, if you wanted to understand The Conscious Tribes proposal you had to read “Love & Revolution” - but Love & Revolution is hundreds of pages – and let´s be frank: not many people read hundreds of pages anymore! And not only is Love & Revolution long - if you´re real interest is in forming a Conscious Tribe of your own, you really have to take parts from different chapters – and put it all together yourself. Pues, ¿qué es una Tribu de Despertar a Través de las Relaciones? Es un grupo de 10 a 30 personas (aunque al principio suelen ser menos) que han hecho (lo que considero) un compromiso profundo y hermoso los unos con los otros - y se han convertido en (lo que llamo) "una familia extendida no-biológica". En otras palabras, están unidas tan estrechamente como muchas familias extendidas grandes solían ser, pero no están unidas biológicamente (por sangre) - sino que están comprometidos con el camino de aprender a vivir conscientemente - con aprender a vivir en presencia e intimidad emocional - entre sí, y con el mundo. No hace falta comprar un terreno juntas, ni mudarse todas juntas - para convertirse en una Tribu de Despertar a Través de las Relaciones Consciente. ¡Nadie tiene que mudarse! ¡Todas pueden quedarse donde están! Pero sí implica reunirse regularmente, involucrarse en la vida de los demás, apoyarse mutuamente, y (quizás lo más importante) dejarse-apoyar los unos por los otros. Por lo tanto, lo ideal es que todas vivan en la misma zona, aunque al principio esto podría no ser posible. El punto clave es que, juntos, los miembros de una Tribu de Despertar a Través de las Relaciones están aprendiendo a vivir dentro de la consciencia. Están aprendiendo a vivir dentro de un campo-energético de presencia e intimidad emocional. Están aprendiendo a vivir la cotidianidad dentro de una experiencia sentida del Gran Misterio - juntos. Al encontrarse, nutren esta experiencia, este campo - y esta los nutre - y gradualmente infunde sus vidas cotidianas - que tenderán, por lo tanto, hacia una menor dependencia del modo de vida mecanicista, industrial, digital y artificial, y hacia un mayor respeto y amor por el mundo natural - y más soveranía. * Así que El Movimiento de Tribus de Despertar a Través de las Relaciones ofrece una visión de un camino vital compartido - una visión de un viaje vital transformador como Tribu. Here´s the audio of "Tribes of Awakening Through Relating Explained (in 5 minutes)" And here´s a transcript of the audio: "Hi, my name´s Mark, I´m in my seventies now - and it was me who initiated The Tribes of Awakening Through Relating Movement a few years ago – after many years of exploration and experimentation. So what´s a Tribe of Awakening Through Relating? It´s a group of 10 to 30 people (though probably less at the beginning) who have made (what I feel is) a deep and beautiful commitment to each other – and become (what I call) “a non-biological extended family”. In other words, they´re bonded as tightly as many large, extended families used to be – but they´re not bonded biologically (by blood) - they´re bonded on a path of learning to live consciously: of learning to live in presentness and emotional-intimacy - with each other and with the world. They don´t have to buy land together, or all move in together - to become A Tribe of Awakening Through Relating. Nobody needs to move! Everyone can stay where they are! But it does mean meeting regularly, being involved in each other´s lives, and supporting – and (perhaps most importantly) letting themselves be-supported-by each other. So all living in the same local area is ideal – although initially this might not be possible. The key point is that together, the members of a Tribe of Awakening Through Relating are learning to live in consciousness. They are learning to live in an energy-field of presentness and emotional-intimacy. They are learning to live their daily lives inside a felt-experience of The Great Mystery – together. When they meet they nourish this experience, this field - and it nourishes them – and it gradually infuses their daily lives - which will therefore tend towards a lessening dependence on the mechanistic, industrial, digital, artificial way of life, and towards greater respect and love for the natural world - and sovereignty. * So The Tribes of Awakening Through Relating Movement offers a vision of a shared life-path - a vision of a transformative life-journey as a Tribe. And it offers philosophical and psychological ideas, as well as various techniques and structures, all designed to support people in forming their own Tribe of Awakening Through Relating – all designed to support unity while honouring each individual´s uniqueness. And every Tribe is completely autonomous. We don't keep track of where Tribes form. By forming your own Tribe of Awakening Through Relating, you don't become "part of” The Tribes of Awakening Though Relating Movement. And yet... which governments remind their citizens that reality is a wonder beyond all definition? Which universities and schools and kindergardens its students? Which commanders its armed forces? Who anywhere? Who won´t let us forget we are all part of a vast, wondrous situation? Every creature, every season, every sky and dawn - a wonder. II And you, you, my friend... Who in the office, who in the car, who in the supermarket, who watching a movie is feeling: I am a wonder, you are a wonder - every one of us a wonder beyond all definition? III Secular authorities deny wonder. Religious authorities deny indefinability (they know what god wants, or they know the truth) - and to deny indefinability is to deny wonder. IV And so, since reality is a wonder beyond all definition - we must conclude that to not see indefinable wonder, to not feel it, to not hold up every daily decision to it - is to be living outside reality. And to be living outside reality is insanity. And a civilization living outside reality is a collective insanity. V Is insanity is reversible? Is it possible to love the insects again, to hear the trees chatting with the stars, to see infinite space in each other´s eyes, to know nothing again? Collectively, who knows!
